Daniel Stewart > Alexander Newton Stewart
b. 25 Apr 1849, AL d. 13 May 1935, Cedar Hill, Dallas County TX Vernoy Cemetery [pdf], unmarked grave, Dallas County TX Alexander never married, though the 1920 Dallas County Census lists Ira Williams, an 8-year-old boy as his grandson. Ira was the grandson of his sister Louisiana Carolina, or Lucy. Ira's mother, Doma Arie Rabe Williams, died giving birth to him, and his father, Newton Commodore Williams, died a year later of cancer. Ira and his five siblings were sent to live with relatives. Lucy brought Ira to live with Alex and their sister Anna, and stayed for awhile. Alexander was 71, and his sister Anna, with whom he shared the house, was 73. Alexander was listed as 82 on the Dallas 1930 Census, living next door to Daniel Morrison Stewart's grandchildren and their children. He cared for his mother and father, his single and widowed sisters, working as a farmer until he retired. He lived in a little four-room house in Grand Prairie owned by Buck Robertson. Next door was a larger house that Buck owned. Later Eula Pool and Leonard Robertson lived in it. I found three mentions of Alexander in the Dallas Morning News: August 18, 1907I could find no other A.N. Stewarts living in Dallas County at the time, so assume that these refer to great-great uncle Alex. According to Alex's official death certificate he died 13 MAY 1935. His address was Cedar Hill, Texas. He died of nephritis, a problem with the kidneys, and also suffered from endocarditis. He died at 4:00 PM. His father is listed as Daniel Stewart mother unknown. The informant signature looks like Arie Williams, at the same address. This could have been Ira Williams, his grand-nephew. Charlene Pool says she heard poor uncle Alex coughing all night long, "as he fought for his breath," the night before he died, and remembers going to his funeral. She said the Stewarts were gentle, quiet people that never spoke unkindly to a child.
