Both of these photographs were scanned from very tiny, old tintypes from the collection of Marvin Stewart, Sr, D.M.'s grandson. The photo to the left was probably taken in the 1870s. It's likely that both are of the young Daniel Morrison Stewart. In the image to the right the man is wearing work clothes of some sort, and he has a blackened eye (his right) which appears more obvious in higher resolution. Tintypes are mirror images, unlike contemporary photographs. If you flip the image horizontally (mouse over image above), and compare it to Daniel Morrison Stewart in the image below, you can more easily see the resemblance. There seems to be a nick in the lip of each man, which may have been from a childhood injury.

Daniel Morrison Stewart Family Bible
Stewart Family circa 1916, Dallas County
Best guess: Luna Oney Stewart Breckenridge, Elizabeth Young England, Susan Wadsworth Wells Sorenson, Mollie England Stewart, Oscar Stewart, Mary Lee Wells Stewart, Floyd Stewart, Thomas Newton Stewart, Viola Breckenridge (girl in front), J.T. Breckenridge (man in back), Eula Stevenson (back), Effie Ada Stevenson, Jesse Wallace Stevenson, Daniel Lee Stewart, Delilah Mae Stewart Thompson, Maud Stewart Brackenridge, Abbie Thompson, Clay Brackenridge, circa 1916, old Stewart house where many of the children were born.
A descendant of Daniel Morrison's son Thomas relates that Mary Lee Wells was 14-years-old when he married her, about 1877 or 1878 in Mississippi. They then traveled back to Florence Hill. This story might be confused with Thomas Newton's wife Mary Jane England who was from Mississippi. Mary Lee Wells was from Alabama, most likely the daughter of Susan Wadsworth and Lee Wells, whom I assume died in the Civil War. In 1870, Mary and Susan Wells are living with Thomas Wadsworth, the brother of Hogan Wadsworth - Mary Catharine Stewart's husband. Also living with them are Julian and James Wadsworth, and E. Wadsworth, a retired housekeeper. By 1880 James and Mary are living next to Florence Ranch - James married to Parthena Wade and Mary married to Daniel Morrison Stewart - a distant cousin. Mary's grandmother is Elizabeth Betsy Walker, the sister of Martha Walker, the wife of John Hicks Florence. The next link should help clarify these relationships.
the 1880 Dallas County Texas Census Daniel Morrison Stewart is living next door to the Florence family, the Wade family, and the Wadsworth family, which includes his older sister Mariah Catharine.
1900 Dallas County Texas Census
James H. and Effa [Matilda] Posey are living six doors down from Daniel Morrison and his family. Delilah has married, an Unknown Thompson, and is now widowed with a six year old daughter. The name looks like Abbie. The previous census page lists Alexander, and 89-year-old Daniel Stewart, Mary C. Florence [Mariah Catharine Stewart] and Ann Dunlap [Anna Judson Stewart]. Both the sisters are listed as widowed. They all live one house away from the Posey's.
1910 Dallas County Texas Census Part I and Part II
Daniel Morrison Stewart and his family are living next door to his son, Thomas Newton and his wife Mollie. On the other side, Daniel Morrison Stewart's daughter Effie A. has married Unknown Stevenson. Delilah's 15-year-old daughter Abbie Thompson, lives with them. Next door to the Stevensons lives Alexander, and next door to him Mary C. Florence. One door down from her lives John H. and Cordelia Posey and their family, James H. and Effa's son. Eleven doors down from them lives James H. and Effa Matilda Posey. Three doors down from them lives Lem and Francis Breckenridge and their children. This son Clay will marry Daniel Morrison's daughter Maudine.

The 1920 and 1930 Dallas County Censuses list Mary L. Stewart, the mother of Thomas N. and Daniel Lee respectively. In these censuses her place of birth is Alabama as is her father's, and her mother's is listed as Georgia.

A cousin believes these to be related to us. According to the 1900 Dallas Census these are George W. and Mary E. Mary's POBs are noted as TN AL TN. Perhaps George Washington and Mary Ellen?
* This date looks like a 1900 census birthdate. Thomas Newton Stewart descendants put her birth as 27 AUG 1855.
According to her death certificate, Mary Lee Wells Stewart died of "pernicious anaemia" with a secondary condition of nephritis, from which she'd suffered for 21 years. She died at home. Thomas Newton Stewart signed her death certificate.
