James Henry Posey,
(from one of his grand-daughters, spelling left as is)
James Henry Posey, mother's father was born in Baltimore, Maryland, 9-22-1824. He died in Dallas County 1-10-1916, age 86. He grew up in Maryland, became a school teacher, fished along the Patomic river, and he made and sold fish nets. He had two sisters; Mary Ann and Rosner and two brothers, Cebert and Edgar. Mary Ann married a Kidd. Rosner never married. Cebert married Polly Ann Beville. Edgar died a young man.
Grand Pa Posey was in Alabama at the age of twenty two, where he married Sara Caroline Thweatt in 1846. There were eight children of this marriage.
James Henry Posey's second marriage about 1875 was to Effie Matilda Stewart, born 1843, M. aga 32, died Dallas Co 1910--86. They settled near Temple, Texas, at Onevill [Oenaville]. They later moved to Dallas county, Florence Hill.
James Henry Posey (grandfather) owned slaves and when he came to Texas, he brought a born slave, Monroe Croweathers with him. Monroe lived among our kin for many years.
[Note: Monro Corethers is listed in the 1900 Bell County TX Census as a boarder with the James and Mariah Murphy family. His birthday is JAN 1858, he's 48, divorced, born in TX, "not sure" about his mother and father, working as a farm laborer. Monroe Carothers is listed in the 1930 (Grand Prairie Road), Dallas County TX census living next door to Joseph C. Stewart. Mr. Carothers is 71, widowed, born in TX, with father from KY and mother from TN. He's listed as a laborer on a general farm. Joseph Coleman Stewart is 74, married, AL, NC, AL and is working as a janitor at a school building (presumably Florence Hill School). Each pays $5 a month for their home. Monroe "Caruthers" died 6 MAY 1936 and it is rumored he is buried in the "family" cemetery in Dallas County, which could be Vernoy. - TSS]
There were four children of the James Henry and Matilda marriage: Henretta, Catherine Florence, Minta Effie, and John Harrison.
Grand pa Posey helped start the first school in Florence Hill. Miss Saddie Miller also a teacher, lived in the Posey home. They cleared the land for the school which was later the Baptist church.
Grand pa Posey raised Leonard Robinson [daughter Henretta's and J.B. "Buck" Robinson's child] with the help of John, Cordy and Buck, Leonards father. Uncle Buck had a store on the corner of the Posey farm. They also raised Vascar Barton, son of Mary Ann and Arthur Barton, a nephew by half sister [Mary Ann Posey who married Arthur Barton].

The narrative above refers to Joseph Stewart and Nancy Wadsworth, of England as the parents of Effie Matilda. It states that she has seven siblings, omitting William, Sarah, Rebecca, Emma and Louvenia. This causes me to believe that the record came from the Joseph Coleman Stewart family. William, Rebecca and Sarah were all dead by 1878. Emma and Louvenia were married and living and apart from the rest of the family. One argument against this theory of parentage is that Effie named one daughter Minta Effie. Araminta was Effie's true mother, not Nancy.
Monroe Curuthers, Fred Bratton, Tom O'Neal, Ira Wagner, Geroge Parrot, Raymond Johnson, Kosse, Limestone County TX, circa 1930
On the back of this photo is written, "Old Monroe Curuthers. Black man come to Texas with my mother's family the Poseys. He was a born slave and spent his entire life time with our family and is buried at Florence Hill, Dallas County. (Raymond) Johnson"
1880 Dallas County TX Census
Matilda, 34, is living with her husband Jas.H.,52. His children Edgar, 21, Carrie, 17, and Emma, 15, live with them. Their children, Henry (Henrietta), 3, listed as a son but actually a daughter, and Florence, 4/12 (born in March), are listed. Vascar [M.] Barton, 2, their grandson also lives with them. Matilda lists her father's birthplace as Scotland.
1900 Census
James H. Posey and wife Effa M., son John H., 18, and daughter Lula M., 15. Six doors down you'll find step-daughter Cordelia M. Grimmett, 14, who will become John H. Posey's wife. Two doors down from them live the Stewarts, Daniel and Mary and their children.
Note:
The 1910 Dallas Census Part 1 lists John H. and Cordelia Posey. Part 2 lists this as a second marriage for both James H. Posey and Effa Matilda Stewart. Posey is listed as having 12 children with 9 surviving, and Effa Matilda as having 4 (listed above) with 3 surviving [Henrietta died in 1902].
James Henry POSEY's first wife was Sarah THWEATT. See a short biography of Luther Benjamin THWEATT which tells of his involvement in the Civil War and his move to Hopkins County Texas in 1868. Luther may have been Sarah's uncle, as he came from the same area, Shelby County and to the same area around the same time as the STEWART and POSEY families.
In May 1878, James is listed as being a member of the North Liberty Missionary Baptist Church. A Sarah Posy is mentioned, as well. She's listed on the Hopkins County 1870 census so she must have died in Texas.
Names
John Harrison Posey's middle name came from his great-grandmother Elizabeth Harrison. She married William Elgin. They were the parents of Catherine Elgin who married Henry Posey, the father of James Henry Posey. It's likely that "Minter" in Loula Minter is short for Araminta, the name of Effa's mother.
