Daniel Stewart > Sir William Wallace Stewart

sir william w c stewartSir William Wallace Stewart
 b. 12 MAY 1839, AL
 d. 3 SEP 1864, Jonesboro,
 Clayton County GA
It is assumed that William is buried in the Jonesboro Confederate Cemetery in an unmarked grave. The area within the enclosure was a burial place of Confederate soldiers who died in local hospitals during the war.

According to the Daniel Stewart family Bible, William was Sir William W. C. Stewart. An authority on Scottish titles told me that William was probably the heir of a baronet, a title purchased from the throne by a landowner and passed on to the first born male child. On the other hand, "Sir" could have just been part of his given name to ensure that people would know that he was named after Sir William Wallace, the Scottish hero. Also noted in the Bible, William "was wounded at the Battle of JonesBoro on the 31st of August 1864 & died on the 3rd September 1864."

War Record of Stewart, Wallace W.,
Company I, 18th Regiment Alabama Infantry, "Curry Guards"

W.W. Stewart enlisted in Company I, 18th Regiment of the Alabama Infantry on 19 AUG 1861 in Harpersville Alabama under Major Peter Forney Hunley. He was admitted, as a confederate prisoner (rebel), to the 2 Division Hospital in Jonesboro GA, on 31 AUG 1864, with a bullet wound which fractured his parietal bones. His wound was dressed "5 hours after injury." He remained there until 1 SEP 1864. The remarks state that he was "Left at Jonesboro GA." His first name is listed as Wallace. This unit fought at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Atlanta, and Jonesboro.

Though we cannot be certain that this is our William Stewart, it seems unlikely that another man with the same initials and last name, from the same town, would be wounded and die in the same place at the same time. Circumstances suggest that this is the war record of our William Stewart. In addition, Luther Benjamin Thweatt (relative and neighbor), Frederick Seybert Posey (William's eventual brother-in-law), and J.S. Martin (possibly his sister Sarah's husband), also served in the same unit. Both Luther Thweatt and Frederick Posey ended up living in Hopkins County TX along with William's family.
Letter from F.S. Posey to J.H. and Caroline Posey of AL
F.S. Posey describes camp life in the 18th Regiment. The letter is written in October, 1861, only about six weeks after he enlisted. He writes with enthusiastic idealism about the war. The letter mentions Algernon Kidd, who married F.S. Posey's sister, Mary Catherine Posey. After Caroline Posey died in Hopkins County TX, James Henry Posey married Effa Matilda Stewart.
