Christopher Columbus Barrett Love, Life, TruthA.J. Bast Andrew Jackson Bast was the brother of Julia Bast Vernoy. A. J. Bast Various rumors cast him as a gunslinger and/or a robber. Cornelius A. Allen, a distant cousin, told the author in a MAY 2007 interview that A.J. Bast was rumored to be "... a robber, stole a box of gold, buried it on border of the Vernoy property in the pasture land. People would come out with metal detectors to find the metal box. Never found anything like that - dad was with them while they looked."

Alexander Newton Stewart Alexander Newton Stewart was the son of Daniel Stewart and Araminta Domer Coleman, brother to Anna J. Stewart, Mrs. M.C. Florence, and Mrs. E.M. Posey. Of the twelve children born to Daniel and Araminta, Great Uncle Alex was the next to the last to die. He was survived by his younger brother, Joseph Coleman Stewart who died the following year and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Ranger, Eastland County, TX. After Alexander's mother, Araminta, died in 1878 the family moved to Dallas County, first settling in Mesquite, near Florence Ranch, and then moving to Grand Prairie. Alex became the head of the Stewart family, caring for his elderly father, Daniel, who died in 1909 at the age of 99. It's suspected that the elder Daniel is buried in Vernoy. Great Uncle Alex cared for his widowed sisters, Anna J. Stewart, Mrs. M.C. Florence, and Lucy Rabe. Lucy's daughter Doma had six children. These six lost both their parents within a year and the children were split up and sent to live with different relatives. Lucy came to live with Alex bringing Doma's two youngest children, Mack and Ira, with her. Great Uncle Alex raised Ira, and Ira signed his death certificate when he died.
Monroe Caruthers
On the back of this photo is written, "Old Monroe Curuthers. Black man come to Texas with my mother's family the Poseys. He was a born slave and spent his entire life time with our family and is buried at Florence Hill, Dallas County. According to an unknown granddaughter of James Henry Posey, he "owned slaves and when he came to Texas, he brought a born slave, Monroe Croweathers with him. Monroe lived among our kin for many years." Catherine Florence Posey, a daughter of James Henry Posey, married Claude Johnson and the family ran the cotton gins in Kosse, Limestone County, Texas. Every year Monroe would go to Kosse to run the gins. Kathryn Johnson Swinnea, a daughter of Florence and Claude remembers Monroe well, saying that he helped raise the nine Johnson children. She told me that he's buried in the family cemetery in Dallas County.
